Does the end need to be a true end?

As you know I am a bit of a writer.  I am getting towards the end of my book and I want to end it a certain way but I am guessing that most people won’t enjoy the end I am planning the most.  Don’t worry it isn’t a massacre at the end and the good guy is going to win.

Have you ever seen “Total Recal”?  It is an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he goes in to take a mental vacation.  The whole jist of the story is they implant memories and that’s your vacation.  Well the movie ends “Spoilers”—- he talks about how he hopes the whole movie was real not just a memory implant.  Is that a good ending?  leaving you to wonder what you just experienced?

My ending isn’t super similar to that but it does kind of leave you hanging.  Leave you wondering what happened.  Is that a bad ending?  Do people need closure?  I am not even doing it planning on writing a sequel.  (I am never a fan of people leaving a cliff hanger so you have to read the next book).

So there you go that’s my dilemma.  Can I leave an ambiguous ending?  Do I need to give my readers closure?
